This week Instagram updated their app to include Instagram Stories; the new feature allows you to share all the moments of your day, not just the ones you want to keep on your profile. Over on Instagram’s blog they say that:
- You don’t have to worry about over posting (no more having to scroll past 56 photographs of buildings in Barcelona because your mate’s there on a city break)
- You can be as creative as you want, using text and drawing tools
- The photos and videos will disappear after 24 hours and won’t appear on your profile grid or in feed
We’ve got to say, these features just screamed Snapchat to us… but why have they copied this fantastically popular app? Go figure.
“Good artists copy; great artists steal”. One of the reactions to this new development is that many reckon Instagram has bettered Snapchat. Instagram has made it simpler to use instead of all the swiping, they have clearly labelled buttons to stop the confusion (ever tried to explain how Snapchat operates to your Dad?) And Instagram has already got a network full of people actively using the app to make friends, follow new people and discover different parts of the world, and that is something Snapchat lacks; a sense of community.
There have been mixed emotions on Instagram Stories…
We’ve had a play and to be totally honest, we’re still swaying more towards Snapchat…but is that just because of habit? Or will we actually be saying RIP Snapchat in the near future? We’ll keep you updated!
